Lesson Study Cycle 2
Equity Based Research Question:
How does the integration of deep reading practices and comprehension skills contribute to the enhancement of writing acumen?

Theory of Action
If we employ the practice of learning to write through example while students are making sense of writing sonnets by reading, engaging with, and then replicating sonnets given in class, then students will understand how the integration of deep reading practices and comprehension skills contribute to the enhancement of writing acumen.
We’ll see if it’s working by looking at their written sonnets at the end.
Content Understanding Goal
Students will better understand writing sonnets by reading, engaging with, and then replicating sonnets given in class to use as a mentor text.
Students will understand the structure of a sonnet including stanzas, number of lines, rhyme scheme, and iambic pentameter.
Task: Writing Sonnets
Students will draft a sonnet in class with a consistent theme, the correct number of lines, the correct number of stanzas, and the option to make it rhyme or fit iambic pentameter.
The Lesson: Sonnets on Valentine's Day
For our main lesson, we created a lesson on sonnets. The day prior to our lesson study, the students participated in a "see-think" about sonnets with a few mentor texts. The students then followed along in the lecture with a note catcher learning the basics and structure of a sonnet.

Focal Student Data

Focal Student 1
This student did not utilize their mentor text as a guide while writing their sonnet. They tend to have a negative outlook on their reading and writing capabilities, and we were hoping that more practice with a mentor text as a guide would help.

Focal Student 2
This student tried to utilize their mentor text, and with teacher prompting used it as sentence starters. They are generally a student that enjoys writing, so this task was preferred. They completed the task during the class period.
